(Some of) The Best Things In Life Are Free!

I was preparing a utilities CD-ROM to provide to State Bar of Wisconsin members who take advantage of the Law Office Management Assistance Program, when I came across the “I want a Freeware Utility to … 300+ common problems solved” page on econsultant.com.

This is a great resource of free utilities that the author has broken down into categories including “I want to … Anti-Spyware/Anti-Virus/Anti-Rootkit/Security Freeware Utilities”, “I want to … Business/Office/Access/Excel/Word Freeware Utilities” and more. While by no means an all inclusive list, it definitely beats trying to find utilities and program from scratch on your own. Use it as a starting list when you are looking for information.

You can also find free software (“freeware”) and software where the developer asks for a fee (“shareware”) at sites such as : cNet.com  PCWorld  Tucows.com  Jumbo.com  Nonags  Shareware.com  Snapfiles .There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of sites for downloading freeware and shareware, so it’s important to separate the good sites from the bad sites. There is always a danger of downloading a virus or spyware when downloading files from the Internet. Generally, the larger sites such as those listed above or those that are recommended by one of the major computer publications will be safe.

Additionally, remember that these programs, while free, may be limited to home or personal use. This distinction is often overlooked, but it is important, so read the End User License Agreement(“EULA”) carefully.
