Skype announces new rates effective January 1, 2007

Last August I did a post on VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) and the VoIP service provided by Skype and why you should have a Skype account.  One of the big questions regarding Skype that has been on everyone's mind that uses the product is what Skype's pricing model would be after January 1, 2007: Skype was offering free calls from your computer to any telephone or cell phone in the United States or Canada through December 31, 2006. Prior to this free offer, get charged 2.1 cents a minute for calls originating within the United States and phone numbers in Canada and the US.  It appears that the wait for Skype's new rates is over.

According to the company's December 13, 2006 press release, the company is introducing a new annual subscription unlimited calling plan. This plan will be applicable to all calls originating within the United States and Canada to any phone within the United States and Canada for $29.95 per year. Skype users will still be able to purchase time by the minute if they prefer.  According to the press release:

The Skype Unlimited Calling plan is available for a flat rate of $29.95 per year. People who sign up for the new plan before January 31, 2007 will receive a special discounted introductory rate of $14.95 per year – 50 percent off the regular price. While Skype to Skype calls will remain free, the new Skype Unlimited Calling plan is an easier and cheaper way for our growing number of SkypeOut users to stay in touch with friends and family over any phone line. Consumers can also choose SkypeOut’s pay-per-minute offering.

For those users who like the convenience of Skype to call their friends and family or even business associates or customers from their computer, the annual subscription plan is a very cost-effective solution.  While Skype is not an option for a traditional telephone replacement such as other VoIP services from Vonage or AT&T due to its lack of emergency 911 service, it makes a terrific supplimental service especially for those who are on the road a great deal.

Skype also announced the release of the Skype 3.0 in another press release  the same date as they announced their new annual subscription plan.

Computer to computer calls using Skype are still free and the number of accessories including telephone handsets that can be used with out going through your computer continue to grow.  If you still haven't tried Skype, you still have the rest of December 2006 to make free calls from your computer to any US or Canadian telephone so why not give it a try.
