I've been absent from these pages for a while and wanted to provide a brief update to everyone. For those that are not aware of it, my last day as the Practice Management Advisor of the State Bar of Wisconsin was on May 23, 2014.
I decided that this is a year for new beginnings. I had bariatric surgery in January and am now down almost 115lbs. However, when i returned to work after surgery and committing 2.5 hours each day once again, I was unable to exercises and do the other things to insure that I continue this weight loss journey I've begun. Coinciding with this was father's worsening health and the need for me to spend more time at home with him and focusing on the family business which I have been doing. Since then, we were able to find someone to assist us with my father and he has been placed on some new medications that have improved his situation immensely. And then on top of all of these other events, I was approached by the 125 year old law firm of Holmstrom & Kennedy in Rockford, IL (my home town) to become their CIO.
So I am now working as the CIO of Holmstrom several days a week and the balance of the week for the family. My 2+ hours in the car each and every day has turned into a 20 minute commute each way and I get to have lunch with my wife and father and enjoy dinners at normal times!
For those that I know from the ABA, you will still see me at Division meetings and ABA TECHSHOW. I already have columns lined up for Wisconsin Lawyer, ABA GP|Solo and other publications and have been contacted by the a Midwestern Bar Association to do CLE seminars for them.
I am still available for speaking engagements as well, schedule permitting, and will be speaking at the Clio Cloud Conference in Chicago and the South Carolina Bar's Solo & Small Firm Conference & Tech Expo in Greenville, SC, in September. In October I will be travelling Illinois speaking for the ISBA Mutual Insurance Company's Risk Management week long road show and then the Wisconsin Solo & Small Firm Conference.
I admit that embarking on this next chapter of my life it is both scary and exciting at the same time. I leave my role as Practice Management Advisor after 8+ years and take on a entirely new role providing direct support, advice and assistance to a terrific law firm and its staff.. These past 8+ years have allowed me to meet a lot of great folks and make new friends as well as grow personally and professionally. It just seems that the stars decided to align, so I decided to grab these opportunities while I could and begin a new chapter in my life.
Stay tuned for new posts as I cover building a new computer, put the Fujitsu ScanSnap SV600 through its paces and compare stands to convert your iPad (or other tablet) into a document camera, to name just a few of the prokects I am working on.
So, in the words of Captain Jean Luc Picard ……Engage!
