Recently I attended a local state-wide CLE seminar as an exhibitor for Time, Billing, Accounting and Practice Management software. It was attended by over 200 lawyers and 50 other exhibitors. One of the features of the event are the many raffles for $25-$50 gifts offered by many of the exhibtors, including my company. Easily half of the attendees who stopped at our booth had no business cards to drop in the bowl, so we had to enter them in our raffle with a hand-written form. Every lawyer before leaving their office or house ought to confirm that they have their: 1) wallet, 2) keys and 3) business cards.

This is a very good program. I have been using it with my dad now for over a year. He is 87 years old and he oftens needs help when things go wrong. I live on in Washington state and he lives in Wyoming. We use Skype computer to computer with headsets. My greatest fear is that Crossloop will eventually get too big and then they will want to charge for everything like eBay, Microsoft, Google, etc, etc.

After you've completed the representation, use this as an opportunity to follow-up and see if everything is going well. For divorce clients, you can use it to see if the terms of the property settlement and support orders are being complied with by the other ex-spouse. If you do estate planning as well use it to talk about the needs to update their estate plan. It's a little more difficult for criminal clients, but think about what they might need and use this to offer additional services or to refer them to someone that does offer the services they might need.

Another good tip I heard was to have a client take you to lunch. Suppose you have a client who wants free advice. Instead of just giving the client advice over the phone, tell them if they buy you lunch, you'll discuss their matter for free. It gives the client legal advice, while still showing them that your advice isn't free.

Brad,

If you want this to appear on every new document that you open using the New command in Word 2007 (or earlier versions for that matter) you need to make the change to the Normal Template (Normal.Dotm) or in the document template for the document that you have created (you should always save things like letterhead, stationary, forms, etc. as document templates not as Word files). In Word 2007 the easiest way is to use the template to add a building block for inserting the path and file names from Microsoft at http://tinyurl.com/cvqj3x .
